What Is Occupational Vision Testing?

Occupational Vision Testing is a series of tests conducted to ensure that an employee's vision meets the specific demands of their job. Depending on the type of work being done, different vision levels may be required to stay safe on the job.

Jobs that involve depth perception, judging distances, reading job-specific instructions, distinguishing colors, hours in front of a computer, operating heavy machinery, or maintaining active night vision, may require vision testing.

At Prairie Eye Care, we can test for a variety of occupations, including:

  • Drivers

  • Construction Workers

  • Office Employees

  • Farmers and Agricultural Workers

  • Factory and Warehouse Workers

  • Teachers and Child Care Workers

  • Healthcare Professionals

  • And More

Why Are Occupational Vision Tests Important?

Occupational Vision Testing is important because it can identify vision problems that might impact an employee's job performance or safety on the job. By getting regular vision exams, employees can be sure that they are seeing as clearly as possible and meeting the vision requirements of their job.

Getting an occupational vision exam can help to identify any potential health concerns that might be related to vision problems.

The Occupational Vision Testing Process

An eye examination is more thorough than a vision screening or general comprehensive eye exam and will ensure that workers are able to meet a target level of function required to complete the visual demands of their job. We will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your vision, including:

  • Visual Acuity Test

  • Depth Perception Assessment

  • Color Blindness Test

  • Night Vision Evaluation

  • Peripheral Vision Test

Based on the occupational eye exam findings, the worker can be placed in a position for which they are best suited, according to their visual skills.
Additionally, the exam can detect previously undiagnosed diseases or refractive errors. Identifying and correcting even the smallest refractive error can potentially increase a worker’s efficiency and therefore the company’s productivity.

Occupational vision testing should occur yearly to allow the employer and optometrist to track any changes in visual function or ocular health that could affect either the safety or eye health of a worker.
