Macular Degeneration Monitoring & Support at Prairie Eye Care

Macular degeneration is one of the most common causes of vision loss as we age but with regular eye exams and proper care, it can often be managed before it affects your daily life.

Noticing Vision Changes? Let’s Take a Closer Look.

We detect early signs of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a common condition that affects central vision and can make tasks like reading or recognizing faces more difficult over time.

How We Detect and Monitor Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

If you’re over 60 or have a family history of AMD, we may recommend additional testing, including:

  • Retinal imaging and OCT scans to assess the health of the macula.
  • Visual acuity and Amsler grid testing to track functional vision changes.
  • Regular baseline comparisons to monitor for new or worsening symptoms over time.

If we detect signs of AMD, we’ll explain exactly what we see, what it means, and what comes next with no pressure and no rushed appointments.

What Happens If You’re Diagnosed With Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

A diagnosis of macular degeneration doesn’t mean you’ll lose your vision, especially if it’s caught early. We’ll guide you through next steps, which may include:

  • Nutritional recommendations (e.g., AREDS2 supplements)
  • Smoking cessation and lifestyle changes to reduce risk
  • Coordination with an ophthalmologist if injection treatment is required (wet AMD only)
  • Regular monitoring to watch for progression
  • UV protection such as sunglasses
