Diabetic Eye Exams and Retinopathy Screenings at Prairie Eye Care

If you’re living with diabetes, your eyes deserve extra attention. Diabetic retinopathy can develop without symptoms, and if left untreated, it’s one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults. That’s why we recommend annual diabetic eye exams as part of your routine eye exam. At Prairie Eye Care, our experienced optometrists focus on early detection, long-term monitoring, and clear communication, so you always know where your eye health stands.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused by damage to the small blood vessels in the retina because of high blood sugar levels. Over time, this can lead to bleeding, swelling, or scarring in the back of the eye, affecting how well you see. In more advanced stages, it can resemble or contribute to macular degeneration and even increase your risk of macular degeneration.

Since there are often no early symptoms, regular eye exams are crucial for detecting issues before they lead to permanent vision loss.

How We Detect and Monitor Retinopathy

Our comprehensive diabetic eye exams include:

  • Retinal imaging and fundus photography to track changes.
  • Dilation to give your optometrist a full view of the retina.
  • Visual acuity and eye pressure testing.
  • Coordination with your family doctor or endocrinologist when needed.

Our eye doctors at Prairie Eye Care take the time to explain what we see, review your individual risk factors, and answer questions so you always feel informed, never rushed.

Diabetic Care That Continues Over Time

If we detect signs of diabetic retinopathy, or identify that you’re at risk, we’ll create a personalized care plan to monitor your vision and intervene early. Many times, managing your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol, alongside routine visits with our family eye care team, is enough to keep your vision stable.

If more advanced care is needed, we offer in-house ophthalmology support at our Sterling Lyon clinic, making referrals smooth, direct, and easier to manage.
