The Benefits of Diabetic Eye Exams

May 31, 2018

Diabetes is becoming an increasing problem across the globe, but there are many out there that aren’t fully informed of what exactly it entails. In short, diabetes is the body’s inability to regulate blood glucose levels. This doesn’t only have an effect on what you can and cannot eat or how you’ll feel after, but it can even have a great impact on your vision.

Diabetes and Your Vision

An effect of dis-regulated blood glucose levels can wreak havoc on the nerves throughout your body, damaging them over time, including the optic nerve which can impair your vision and even lead to blindness.

Diabetic eye diseases include diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, even cataracts and glaucoma.

The Benefit of Regular Eye Exams

If you or a family member of yours has diabetes and you plan to help preserve your eye health, to get the most out of your eye exam, we make these recommendations to our patients:

  • Keep your diabetes under control. Medication, diet, and exercise are all important tools to keep your body ticking along in the fight against diabetes. The better controlled your glucose levels are, the less diabetes can have an effect on your vision.
  • Make yearly appointments to monitor your vision closely and KEEP them. Any diabetic eye disease, if caught early, can be treated to keep from getting worse, or can even sometimes be reversed. The more your eye doctor is checking, the better chances you have.
  • Be sure to report sudden changes in your vision to us immediately.

At Prairie Eye Care in Winnipeg, Manitoba, we want our patients to be able to confide in us, always. If you have diabetes and are growing concerned with your vision, feel free to calls us and we’d be more than happy to see you.
